A Walk through Stages of Sleep

Sleep is the most significant part of our life. An average human being spends about 26 years of his life sleeping. Our body undergoes several transformations and series of changes while we sleep that helps to maintain our physiological health and emotional vitality.

  1. STAGE 1– Non-Rapid Eye Movement Sleep :

In this stage, we start to doze off, the body relaxes from the state of wakefulness to a light slumber. Occasional twitches in the body can be seen due to slowing down of brain activity. This stage last for 1 to 5 minutes. Though if we are disturb, we can easily wake up in this stage, if not, then we move on to the next stage of sleep.

  1. STAGE 2 – Non-Rapid Eye Movement Sleep :

In the next stage of NREM sleep, we become unaware of our surroundings and less likely to be awakened. An average human being spends about half of their in this stage. This stage typically lasts for 20-30 minutes.

Changes occur in this stage :

  • No eye movement
  • Decrease in body temperature
  • Further deceleration of breath and heart beat
  • Rise and decline of brain waves and production of `Sleep Spindlesʼ
  1. STAGE 3 & 4 Non-Rapid Eye Movement Sleep :

The stage 3 and 4 of non-REM sleep, are also called delta, or the slow wave sleep. In these stages, we are in our deepest sleep and less likely to be responsive towards background noise and activity. Thus, these period are also referred as transitional periods where we move from light sleep to deepest sleep. Sleeping walking and wetting of bed generally happens in these stages.

  1. Rapid Eye Movement Sleep :

In the last sleep stage, respiratory system and brain becomes more active with rapid eye movement. We generally get dreams during this stage. This sleep occurs after 90 minute of falling asleep and usually last upto an hour.

Changes occur in this stage :

  • Temporary Immobilization of muscles and body.
  • Most vivid Dream occurs
  • Rapid movement of eyes
  • Increased brain activity
